About
Dana Katherine Scully was born February 23, 1964 to Captain William Scully, USN (whom died December 1993), and Margaret (Maggie) Scully. She has an older brother William Jr., older sister Melissa (whom died from complications of gunshot wounds, mistaken for Dana, in April 1995), and younger brother Charles. Dana had a daughter, Emily Sim, whom was conceived through the harvesting of one of Scully’s eggs (without her knowledge) in a Syndicate alien-human hybridization experiment. Emily died in 1997.
Before receiving forensic and investigative training at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Dana was a licensed medical doctor and scientist. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from the University of Maryland in 1986; her senior thesis was entitled ‘Einstein’s Twin Paradox: A New Interpretation.’ After completing a residency in forensic pathology, she was recruited to Quantico. She graduated from the Academy in ’90 and taught forensics there for two years. During this time she became romantically involved with Special Agent Jack Willis, whom was also an Academy instructor. Their relationship lasted for about a year.
On March 21, 1992, Section Chief Blevins assigned Scully to the X-Files Division of the FBI. A scientific skeptic, her main function in the X-Files division was to debunk ‘Spooky’ Mulder’s work
Logic and science are things Scully holds close, and because of this she is skeptical of anything paranormal. Dana believes that everything has a logical, scientifically-quantified explanation for it. At least – this is how she initially felt going into the X-Files. Now that she has been with Mulder for a few years and both seen and experienced things for herself, she sometimes experiences moments of great conflict. Science, logic, and morality all come in to play with how she views and believes things to be, and sometimes she cannot quantify something to which she has been exposed via the X-Files with any of these things. Her beliefs are often challenged by her work, but she constantly endeavors to forge ahead and find solid evidence – the truth is nothing without evidence to prove it to be so.
Prior to finding herself on Tabula Rasa, Dana had some very profound things happen in her personal life. In December ’97, Dana discovered that she had a daughter, Emily, whom had been created as part of a Syndicate alien-human hybrid experimentation. Emily’s parents died and Dana tried to gain custody of her and Mulder even testifies for her in an adoption trial. Unfortunately, Emily became very sick and had a growth inside her body. She passed away – or so Dana had thought. At Emily’s funeral, Dana opened the casket to retrieve the necklace she had given Emily to wear. Inside the casket is not a body but a pile of sand. Dana recovered the necklace, but no trace of Emily was found. A few weeks prior to this, Scully nearly died from her cancer, as it had gone into her blood stream. The family priest came to pray over her body, while Mulder discovered that the vial he’d initially though contained an antidote but later learned was de-ionized water actually *did* contain an antidote for Scully’s cancer – a computer chip designed to inhibit the cancer. Scully decided to have the chip implanted, and she went into remission. It isn’t known whether the remission happened because of the prayer or the chip.
